Hilary Duff Is Seeing The Light
The actress spent years trying to live up to Hollywood’s standards. Now she’s focused on what makes her feel happy and whole and content—on the inside.

“I have an idea…” says Hilary Duff’s 3-year-old daughter, Banks, her finger tapping her mouth. “Can I have a treat?” The child tilts her blonde head to one side as her mother looks upon her with amusement. “Did you eat any vegetables for lunch?” Hilary asks. Banks says yes, though her mother suspects otherwise. But who can deny a little indulgence in the face of such ingenuity?

Banks scampers out of view on Zoom, and Hilary, left alone in her bright and airy bedroom, shakes her head affectionately. At 34 years old, she’s the mother of three children. Besides Banks, she has son Luca, 10, from her previous marriage to retired hockey player Mike Comrie, and daughter Mae, 1. When Mae was born, the baby took over her office, so now Hilary’s bedroom is her last sanctuary. She worries her days in this house are numbered—her family, which also includes musician husband Matthew Koma, three dogs (including a 130-pound Saint Bernard), and seven chickens, has outgrown it. “We’re busting at the seams here,” she says. “You should see my garage. It’s stroller and car-seat city, scooters everywhere.”

But this is the house where she recovered from her 2016 divorce, where she learned to parent Luca as a single mom, where she eventually wed Koma on the front lawn, and where their girls were born. It’s hard to leave a place that’s held such joy. And food is a big source of that happiness. “We eat butter in this house, and olive oil, and sodium, and sugar,” says Hilary, taking a bite of a turkey, arugula, and pickle sandwich. A deviled egg, which she made this morning because her chickens are laying, waits on her plate as Mom’s version of a treat.

I’ve gotten to a place of being peaceful with the changes my body has gone through.

Hilary’s appeal as an actress has always been her easy familiarity. As a child star on Lizzie McGuire, she was the quintessential everygirl, as warm as she was vulnerable. After years of being identified with the character, and multiple passes on offers to reboot her, she agreed to revisit Lizzie in a series for Disney+. The project tanked when Hilary and the network differed on their vision for adult Lizzie. “She had to be 30 years old doing 30-year-old things,” Hilary says she insisted, pushing for a more mature Lizzie. “She didn’t need to be doing bong rips and having one-night stands all the time, but it had to be authentic. I think they got spooked.”

It’s Tuesday morning, and Los Angeles is its most buoyant self. The Teslas on Beverly are glinting from a fresh wash. No one has seen a cloud since last week. Optimism is palpable. The message from the universe: It’s a Hilary Duff kind of day.

Duff greets me at her front gate with a hug and says, “It’s so nice to meet you!” as though it is genuinely nice to meet me.

Duff is an ambassador of her city: high-waisted jeans, pink slides, swinging blonde hair, a generously cut cardigan that’s part shawl, part blanket, and the kind of brilliant white smile that makes you want to count her teeth. It’s hard not to stare. We walk around the house to the backyard, and I glance/peek/spy into her living room window. Tasteful, comfortable, and all the things you would expect Hilary Duff’s living room to be. Then, smack in the middle, a small pile.

“Hilary, someone pooped in your living room.”

“Oh, ugh. Hang on a sec,” she says. She disappears into the house, says something to someone, presumably about the poop. In a minute, she’s back. “We have a very old, senior citizen dog.”

She leads me to the pergola on the side of her house — we sit on the couches, bathing ourselves in dappled sunlight.

Hulu heeft Hilary’s nieuwe serie ‘How I Met Your Mother’ vernieuwd voor een tweede seizoen, ook zal het seizoen langer worden dan het eerste en 20 afleveringen krijgen. Het is nog niet bekend wanneer de opnames beginnen en de serie te zien zal zijn.

In an interview, the actress and singer discussed her wide-ranging career and “How I Met Your Father,” her new sitcom reboot on Hulu.

Hilary Duff — forever young, forever pert, forever blond — found a home on the Disney Channel two decades ago as Lizzie McGuire, a self-possessed tween with an animated alter ego. After forays into music, where she went multiplatinum, and film, where she and her sister, Haylie Duff, racked up a few Razzie nominations, she stopped chasing auditions.

“I had been touring for four years,” she said. “And I really just needed a break.”

She married the hockey player Mike Comrie, and had a son, now 9. Two years later, in the midst of her divorce, she received an offer for Darren Star’s TV Land rom-com series, “Younger,” and went on to spend seven delightful seasons as the brash publishing executive Kelsey Peters.

Along the way she had a daughter with the musician Matthew Koma, whom she married just before the pandemic. She became pregnant again a year later. In her ninth month, with “Younger” newly wrapped, she heard from Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, co-showrunners of “This Is Us” (with Dan Fogelman) who were putting a new spin on the echt-00’s sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”

That series, which ran on CBS from 2005-14, starred Josh Radnor as the mother meeter, with a supporting cast that included Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel. In the new show, “How I Met Your Father,” Duff plays the lovelorn heroine — a striving photographer named Sophie with a perky New York apartment that few real starving artists would be able to afford. (Kim Cattrall appears onscreen as the older, cashmere-clad version of Sophie.)

Duff had seen only a few episodes of the original. “I like murder too much to watch comedy,” she said. But after some initial hesitation, she agreed. The show debuted its first two episodes last week, with eight more to follow on a weekly basis.
